Tips on Effective Teams

Whether an effective team is needed for your school or work, it is highly needed to achieve incredible results. In order to have a successful and effective team, you must do the following: (1) have a clear objective of team goals and projected outcomes; (2) communicate by being open, honest, and respectful of opinions, ideas, and individuals; (3) have a participative and a dependable leader who can lead the group to achieve goals and objectives.
“Clarity inspires confidence in what needs to be done and in the leader.” (Heathfield, N.D.) Teams must have a clear vision and understanding of their goals and how they are going to accomplish them. Having that clarity, the outcomes of what is expected of each member can cause a greater commitment. (Heathfield, N.D.)
Communication allows people to express their thoughts, opinions, and potential solutions to problems (Heathfield, N.D.).  Team members must be able to ask questions, seek help if needed, and give feedback. Keep in mind when communicating with your team to remain honest, respectful, and reliable (Patterson, 2010) so the individual is aware of what is expected.
According to John Maxwell, “ A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.”  A leader needs to be able to lead by example. Having a leader who is capable of making team decisions, supporting members, holding meetings, assigning tasks, and holding team members accountable is essential for an effective team. (Heathfield, N.D.)
“Successful team work is the cornerstone for creating functioning and contributing teams.” (Heathfield, N.D.) In conclusion, effective teams can be simple and difficult at the same time. With a clear vision, open communication, and participative leader, team members are able to work easier with each other and successfully achieve goals and objectives. By following these guidelines, you are a step closer to having a successful team.
